Tip #45 - Pro Tip: look on local websites for local airlines

This is a strategy I invented a while back to reach unusual destinations. When you travel to these harder-to-reach destinations, like places in Africa or the South Pacific, standard search engines will usually just show you the listing for an insanely expensive flight with several stopovers on several continents. This is just how the algorithms work if the websites don’t have any airlines covering that country listed. That doesn’t mean there aren't any airlines going there; it just means the websites don’t have it in their databases and prefer offering you an insanely expensive ticket rather than nothing.

You have to make sure you find the local airlines that are not listed in search engines. The strategy I developed is to search on Wikipedia for the airport I am going to. The airport itself will usually list the airlines that connect to the airport with all their destinations. I will usually find weird airlines, some that don't even have the option to book online. I will check their websites one by one to see if there are cheaper routes available than what I found through standard search engines. That can save me as much as 50% to 75% on the flight in some places!
